Intel Corp and Nomad install WiMAX technology on Caltrain light-rail

WiMAX technology from chip manufacturer Intel Corp and Nomad Digital Ltd, has been installed on a Caltrain light-rail vehicle in Silicon Valley in the US, to allow laptop users access to the Internet and e-mail.

The train, which is reportedly the first mass-transit train in the US, provided continuous high-speed Internet access this week, between Millbrae and Palo Alton stations. While testers from the two companies composed e-mail, watched streaming video and completed large file downloads at broadband speeds, the train reached speeds of 79 miles per hour. The train is linked to wireless base stations situated at the side of the track, with radios placed every few miles along the rail. The technology may also be used by Caltrain to monitor security cameras and train speeds.

Caltrain said the successful launch of WiMAX technology on this first train will enable the company to introduce the technology along the line, from Gilroy north, through San Jose, to San Francisco. Caltrain confirmed it does not intend to make extra charges for the service, which is expected to be available within two months.

Nomad, based in Hexham, in the UK, is working on wireless projects in China, South America and the Middle East and has already installed similar systems in the Netherlands and the UK.

Wi-Fi Sharing Company Wins Skype, Google as Backers

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters)—A wireless communications start-up in Spain that is partly a grass-roots social movement seeking to encourage users to share Internet access with their neighbors is set to announce Monday $21.7 million in funding from big name backers, such as Skype Technologies and Google.

Fon Technology SL said it has secured 18 million euros in initial financing from Skype, the popular Web-based calling company now owned by eBay Inc., Google Inc., and venture capital firms Index Ventures and Sequoia Capital.

These backers offer legitimacy for Madrid-based Fon, whose goal is to create a block-by-block network of shared wireless links around the globe, by turning users of local Wi-Fi access into an army of "foneros," or people sharing wireless access.

Fon is a wireless incarnation of peer-to-peer technology that was first made popular—and controversial—by the pioneering online music-sharing service, Napster.

As the company's name implies, Fon would allow users of not just laptops, but also mobile phones or the latest portable gaming devices—anything with a built-in Wi-Fi link—to share wireless connections offered by other Fon users.

But Fon could face legal challenges from phone and cable TV carriers who bar users from sharing Web access, just as Hollywood sued and put the original Napster out of business for encouraging millions to illegally share music.

"It's an awesome idea just like Napster was, with all the consequences that come with it," said Roger Entner, a wireless industry analyst with market research firm Ovum in Boston.

SOCIAL MOVEMENT, OR MONEY-MAKER?

The company's multilingual Web site at http://en.fon.com/ is a mix of social activist iconography and money-making e-commerce self-service. Clicking the link "Join the Movement!" takes one to a subscriber sign-up page, for example.

Fon is the brainchild of Argentinian entrepreneur Martin Varsavsky, founder of major Spanish telecommunications and Internet companies Jazztel Plc and Ya.com.

Fon's founder said his strategy is to bargain with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and vastly increase their audience.

"My heart is with people who invest in networks," Varsavsky told Reuters in an interview late last week. "We befriend the ISPs by sharing revenue," he said.

Toward that end, Fon has signed up GlocoNet, the second largest ISP in Sweden, and U.S.-based Speakeasy of Seattle.

Varsavsky said he also holds out hope of convincing potential adversaries among established ISPs such as Telefonica , Deutsche Telekom AG, AT&T Inc. and Time Warner Inc. of working with his "foneros."

Internet subscribers who install Fon software to make their wireless routers able to share bandwidth with other Fon users are then allowed to freely roam the Fon network around town or worldwide and find wireless connections as they go.

Fon only needs two to four participants, or foneros, per city block to give good wireless coverage, Varsavsky maintains.

If a user is part of Fon, they receive wireless access as they roam for free. Non-Fon members pay for Wi-Fi service, which Fon plans to split with local Internet access providers.

"You first have to become a customer of an ISP... Then you can become a 'fonero' if you donate Wi-Fi," Varsavsky said. "If you don't donate, you are not a 'fonero."'

Wi-Fi was first popularized by grass-roots technology advocates in high-tech centers around the world, who sought to create shared neighborhood networks. It is this grass-roots spirit that Fon seeks to tap.

"That's a great idea, but you are breaking the law," Ovum's Entner said flatly. "It is treating Wi-Fi as communal property when it is not."

While sharing Wi-Fi connections remains commonplace among consumers, the situation exists because ISPs have, by and large, been reluctant to enforce their user agreements banning this.

Google announces introduction of Featured Content for Google Earth

Internet search company Google Inc (Nasdaq:GOOG) on Wednesday (13 September) announced the introduction of Featured Content for Google Earth.

Google's new Featured Content is described as a showcase of multimedia overlays in Google Earth that connect users to information about the world around them from a variety of premium content providers.

Users can access these overlays by clicking on the 'Featured Content' checkbox in the Google Earth sidebar, Google said. Icons for each Featured Content provider will span the globe, enabling users to click on individual locations and learn about the area's significance.

Yahoo Maps Leaves Beta

Complementing the post below:

Congratulations to Yahoo Maps for leaving beta. Congratulations to Yahoo for actually having a property that leaves beta… but I kid Google. Let’s talk about Yahoo.

If you have a broadband connection (and Flash 7 or better) you’ll be able to use the new broadband version of Yahoo Maps (the old version will still be available for folks on dialup.) There is an overview tour (Flash again) and you can of course read the announcement on the Yahoo Maps blog, but here’s a quick roundup of what I found new and different:
* A complete Flash-based experience, that actually seemed to load pretty quickly.
* A checkbox to toggle live traffic conditions off and on. (I’d like to see historical conditions here too — map out a multistate driving route and get an idea where the congestion is)
* A “picture in picture” map showing you an overview of the area at which you’re looking. It lives in the upper right corner of the map though you can get rid of it if you don’t need it. Handy when you’re zoomed in a lot and you’ve lost track of where you are. The location it shows changes as you drag the map around, and it appears to be permanently in “map” format (as opposed to satellite or hybrid.)
* A quick toggle to the old-style “dial up connection” map.

Yahoo has announced that the satellite and aerial imagery now covers the entire US and over 100 cities internationally. I have a test I do to check the age of the imagery — looking at a particular street where a building was torn down over a year ago — actually I think it’s closer to two years at this point. Anyway, Yahoo flunked, the old building is still there. So while Yahoo might have full satellite imagery beware of its age.

Despite that, there’s a lot to like here. I like the new picture-in-picture feature. I like the Flash-based interface — it actually makes other map services look a bit clunky! I like the traffic feature though I’d like to see more things added to it. And I like how quickly the whole thing runs. But watch out for that imagery!

Yahoo! Local Maps (beta)

Yahoo! Local Maps, currently in beta testing, is tailored for those times when you just want to generate a local map or produce directions. The maps generated here are far more interactive than those made in tandem with searches on Yahoo! Local, which is geared toward helping you search for local events or businesses. Keep in mind, though, that what makes the maps interactive is the use of Flash, so you may need to upgrade to the latest free version of Macromedia Flash Player (Version 6,0,79,0 as of this writing; the PC we initially used for testing had Flash 6). There's also a non-Flash, non-beta version of Local Maps, but it lacks a lot of the snazzy effects available in the Flash-y beta version.

The first feature we fell in love with was the inset zoom window on the main page. An easy-to-adjust slider lets you quickly zoom in and out, from 0.2 miles to the entire continental U.S.

The application uses both Tele Atlas and Navteq data and is particularly rich in map content. You won't, however, find the multiple types of map views (such as bird's-eye views, satellite imagery, or hybrid views) you'd encounter at Google Local or Windows Live Local. Yahoo!'s focus has been on the search capabilities and maps themselves. As with Google's maps, you can easily click and drag the maps in Yahoo! Local Maps (beta), though they are a bit slower and less responsive. If you're a registered Yahoo! user, once you've signed in, the service will open a map of your home address as a default jumping-off place.

Another feature we really like—once we'd discovered it—was being able to click and drag the flags on the map we'd generated during searches. Dragging them from the map into the left-hand search pane we could very simply generate a multi-point itinerary. We could also easily change the order and, best of all, we'd end up with a highlighted route on the map.

A Yahoo! representative explained that everything on this page, as well as much that populates the beta version of Local Maps, was created in response to user feedback and requests. When questioned about a lack of some of the more intriguing things found at the other sites, such as the satellite views and other imagery, the response was that these things aren't among the features most requested by Yahoo! users (though a satellite component is in the works).

In fact, our only real criticism of the site is that some things don't show up in search but will show up on the map if you know where they are and zoom in far enough (we can't just pick on Yahoo! here either; all these new map/search sites suffer the same symptoms). For instance, we had the same trouble finding the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum with Yahoo! Local Maps (beta) that we did with Google. Searching on "Intrepid" brought up lots of businesses with Intrepid in the name, and you could locate the site by digging a bit in the results (under Intrepid Foundation), but you had to dig. Nor could we find the site through combinations of the museum's official name, within quotes or without quotes. Such things can be and generally do get fixed as people provide feedback—one of the truly great aspects of the Web—made even easier by Yahoo!'s "Tell us what you think" feedback box.

We'd have liked a pushpin-type feature on Yahoo! Local Maps (beta) similar to what we found on Windows Live Local. Though a Yahoo! spokesperson told us that it is possible and simple to place multiple markers on our map, we could not figure out how to make the application do this. When you search for a location or business, a marker will be placed there, but that marker is removed when you perform your next search. We also encountered repeated errors when we tried to use a "My Saved Locations" feature.

Even with these hiccups, we really like the overall layout and functioning of the page. The left-hand side of the main map page is where you enter your searches. Topping the list is "Get Map and Directions." You have two further hyperlink choices immediately below, for generating "Reverse Directions" (so you don't have to read your original directions backwards to get home) or "Roundtrip."

Below these features is the more general "Find on the Map" search bar. Immediately below this you'll find some hyperlink choices that let you further narrow your search by browsing through preset categories such as "ATMs & Services," "Entertainment & Shopping," "Restaurants & Bars," and "Travel."

At the top of the map itself there are several choices as well: one for generating a printable version of the map; a link for e-mailing the map; "Send to Phone," which is clickable only when you've registered for this feature and are logged in; and Live Traffic. You can also add a map to your my Yahoo! Page.

Intel and Skype Announce Collaboration

Skype and Intel today announced plans for Internet-based voice and video communications. Specifically, engineers from the two companies will collaborate on optimizing Skype 2.0 for use with Intel's dual-core processor systems, including Centrino Duo (laptop) and Pentium D (desktop) PCs. Intel and Skype also hope to tighten integration with Intel's new Viiv technology.

The first tangible result of these efforts is the availability of free, ten-way voice conference calling for up to ten people in Skype 2.0 (code for version 2.0 went gold on January 5th). Previously, the limit was 5-way conferencing, and it's still that way on even a dual-core AMD system. But anyone with an Intel Centrino Duo laptop, Intel Pentium D desktop, or Pentium Extreme Edition processor should be able to take advantage of the 10-way conference-calling function.

While efforts to date have focused on audio improvement and adding the ten-way calling feature, further optimization of Skype 2.0 for video-conferencing is on the horizon for later this year. Until now Skype has run both audio and video as a single thread. The next engineering improvement specifically targeting Intel dual-core systems will be to split the video and audio into two threads, thus taking even more advantage of the architecture. Also, look for improvements to Skype on Intel-based handheld devices and an optimized app for Apple dual-core systems (though there's no announced timeline for either of these).

New Features for Google Desktop

Google launched a beta version of the new Google Desktop 3 today, with enhanced search capabilities, integration with Google Talk, and a more flexible sidebar.

The new Google Desktop still indexes the files on your PC for speedy searching, but version 3 lets you search multiple computers from one desktop, provided that Google Desktop 3 is installed on all the PCs. To do this, indexes are transferred using SSL encryption to Google's servers, then on to your other machines for "remote" searching. For security, this functionality is turned off by default, and indexes are password protected in addition to the encryption.

Google Desktop 3 (beta) still has the sidebar with widget-style plug-ins that can automatically track things like weather, traffic, air fares, and news, but version 3 lets you share your sidebar content with friends. And screen space-constrained users will appreciate the ability to break off individual components of the sidebar and move or resize them.

Apple iPod nano

Once again, Apple has come up with a design that turns heads. Enter the iPod nano. But this was a relatively easy one for the designers, if not the engineers: They took the full-size iPod and made it really, really slim. We measured it at just 80 cents thick—that's 3 quarters and a nickel, or 0.27 inches for you traditionalists—by 5 dimes long (3.5 inches) by 2 pennies wide (1.6 inches). According to Apple, that's 62 percent smaller than the now-discontinued iPod mini the nano is replacing. It weighs just 1.5 ounces, and it really does fit in the smaller front pocket of your blue jeans without the slightest bulge. A few things changed—some compromises in the name of miniaturization and some actual improvements—but the end result is a spectacular product. Sure, it doesn't have an FM tuner or voice recording, but it does have an unsurpassed interface, a color screen, excellent sound quality, and an undeniable cool factor. Plus, it's flash-based, so you don't have to worry about skipping or dead hard drives.

We received the black model for testing, but we were slightly disappointed to find that the included stock Apple earbuds have retained their distinctive "mug-me" white. A nice touch is that the icon that showed up on our desktop was black. The iPod nano doesn't support syncing via FireWire; instead, a message comes up telling you to please use the included USB cable. It still charges via FireWire, though. Upon first connection, our 4GB model had 3.7GB available for storage, with the remaining space being used for system files. It took us only 1 minute 6 seconds to transfer 512MB of MP3 files via USB 2.0.

One of the biggest additions for Microsoft Windows users is that the iPod nano syncs with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express contacts and calendars (in addition to those from iCal, of course). We had absolutely no trouble doing so, and contacts are sortable by first or last name. Games include the same old Brick, Music Quiz, Parachute, and Solitaire. The stopwatch, however, is a very cool new feature, especially considering that the nano is ultratiny and flash-based—ideal for working out. It can record lap times as well, and then saves them along with a date and time stamp. When you go back and view your recorded times, it also shows you your shortest, longest, and average lap in addition to your total time and individual lap times. The iPod nano also boasts a world clock which displays the time in analog or digital. Another handy feature is being able to adjust the audiobook reading speed.

Apple added a security measure called Screen Lock, which is a graphical combination lock for which you create a 4-digit code. The click wheel provides just the right amount of sensitivity so you don't scroll through the numbers too fast. After you set the lock, you can still use the Play/Pause button but nothing else. Your code pops up on the screen each time you choose Turn Screen Lock On from the menu as a reminder; this is handy but doesn't provide particularly robust security.

Subjective sound quality is nearly identical to that of the final-generation iPod mini, which is to say, excellent. Music is clear, with very solid bass and crisp highs. The stock Apple earbuds perform adequately, though the player can definitely handle high-end headphones with aplomb (the plug of our Etymotic ER4P canalphones, however, is actually slightly wider than the player itself!). There are 22 preset listening modes, so we think most users won't miss a customizable equalizer. The bass booster provides enough extra depth for thundering bass such as that found in some electronic music, though we heard significant harmonic distortion on the low end that noticeably altered the music. But the sound is plenty good enough with the EQ off.

On our formal tests, the iPod nano actually outperformed the 6GB iPod mini, with a slightly cleaner signal and better response in the lowest octave than its predecessor. Our square-wave test also showed that the output stage is significantly stronger than the mini's when loaded with Apple's stock earbuds but not as strong as that of the iPod shuffle, which has a different type of output. Apple rates the battery life at 14 hours of continuous audio playback, and it can fast-charge to 80 percent in 1.5 hours.

Photos sync easily and quickly via iTunes; just select the iPod tab in Preferences, and then choose Photos. The 176-by-132-pixel 1.5-inch screen is about 0.2 inches smaller than the iPod mini's, but it gains color; photos look sharp and vivid, though we're still wishing for pan and zoom capabilities. Format support is still admirably broad, encompassing JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PSD (Mac only), and PNG. It can do slide shows with music, customizable slide times, and several different transitions.

Naturally, there are already a few accessories for the nano, including lanyard headphones (yes, it's wearable, via the headphone jack on the bottom of the device), a nano Dock, nano armbands, and nano Tubes (silicone cases). The cases are a good idea, as we've already covered our shiny new nano in fingerprints. And we're sure third parties will begin shipping other add-ons soon. Thankfully, the nano retains other iPod models' standard 30-pin dock connector, so it'll work with many existing accessories. It also ships with a plastic insert so you can use the nano with your existing iPod docks. Apple did not include any voice-recording features, however, so you won't be able to plug in third-party microphones. Nor will you be able to use add-ons that use the other iPods' 4-pin remote control connector, which is missing on the nano. (That means no remote, either.)

At $199 for the 2GB version and $249 for the 4GB version (both available in black or white), we feel that Apple has made an incredibly satisfying product. We were so impressed that we're awarding it our Editors' Choice award. Sure you can get a 20GB full-size iPod for $299, but the benefits of an extremely small size and no moving internal parts easily justify the price.

Cell Phones to Make WiFi Calls

Chipmaker Royal Philips Electronics confirmed that a U.S. cellular carrier will launch voice-over-Wi-Fi technology this year, based on Philips' new Nexperia 6120 chipset. Callers should be able to make calls on their home Wi-Fi networks for "a couple of bucks a month, flat rate," according to Philips' Carsten Schimanke.

The Nexperia 6120 chipset is in the Samsung SGH-T709 phone, Schimanke said. We saw the T709 at CES, and it's a slender, attractive slider phone. The solution uses Philips' BGW211 802.11g WLAN chipset, according to the company. The chipset adds about $12 to the price of a phone, Schimanke said.

Nexperia's UMA technology lets calls "tunnel" from Wi-Fi access points, through the Internet, and onto a cellular network. From there, the calls will be tracked by the carriers billing system and forwarded along to their destination.

Philips would not identify their carrier partner. But the Samsung T709 we saw at CES showed options to connect to T-Mobile Hotspots as well as home networks. T-Mobile is leveraging its Wi-Fi network as a competitor to other carriers' 3G high-speed cellular systems. With UMA, every home with a wireless LAN and every Starbucks becomes a place with full bars of signal, and that's compelling.

Google Combines Email, Chat

Google unveiled on Tuesday plans to launch a new communication feature for its free webmail service. Gmail Chat integrates e-mail and IM capabilities and will be added to all US-based accounts in the coming weeks.

Google has enabled the new feature by adding the Gmail service to its Google Talk Network. The network works on a "service choice" premise, where it offers IM interoperability regardless of service provider. Google has embedded the Chat feature directly into its e-mail interface so the user doesn't have to download additional applications.

After signing into a Gmail account, a customized "Quick Contacts" box shows up on the screen. Quick Contacts are people that users communicate with most often, whether through e-mail or IM. The user can click on any individual to begin conversing.

Similar to storing e-mails, when the Chat function is enabled, Gmail users can opt to save their conversations. Chats are stored by date and time in a specified folder, which the user can search by keyword or contact. In addition, users can view, forward, print, delete or reply to messages stored in the chat history.

Privacy concerns? No problem. Google also allows users to go "off the record" when chatting with particular people. Users can apply the off-the-record option to any Quick Contact, and once that designation has been made it remains "persistent across chats," meaning that the setting will be applicable to the individual at hand until the user disables the function.

Gmail Chat is currently available on select Web browsers, including Windows IE 6.0+ and Firefox 1.0+. Google says it plans to roll the feature out to additional browsers in the future, according to officials.

IBM Power6 Chip To Double Speed

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp. said on Monday it had developed new chipmaking methods that will allow its upcoming Power6 computer processor to run twice as fast as current versions.

Instead of just making transistors smaller, IBM came up with a process to alter how silicon behaves by placing a layer of insulator underneath a layer of silicon less than 500 atoms thick, said Bernard Meyerson, chief technologist of IBM's technology group.

"You literally can squeeze silicon, and thereby give it properties to make it faster. The thing that is making it run faster is not just that it's smaller but because you're changing its basic physical properties," Meyerson told Reuters in an interview.

IBM's advances mean its Power6 chip, due in the middle of 2007, will run at speeds between 4 and 5 gigahertz, at least double the speed of current Power chips found in server computers that run corporate networks, Meyerson said.

The Power6 chip will compete against offerings from IBM rivals such as Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc.

Miniaturization has allowed chipmakers to make chips faster by cramming more transistors on a single slice of silicon, to the point where high-end processors have hundreds of millions of transistors.

But the process also tends to make chips run hotter, and engineers have been trying to figure out how to keep shrinking chips down while avoiding having them frying their own circuitry.

The higher speed of the Power6 will be achieved with existing chip manufacturing technology that etches transistors only 65 nanometers wide, several hundred times smaller than a human blood cell.

The new chip should also use less power, due in part to what Meyerson called "holistic design."

"You literally tune the system from the atoms and molecules to the software at the other end to get the maximum possible benefits," Meyerson said.
